Huge win for
Sam
14 October 2001
Gold Coast marathon
sensation Samantha Hughes, added the prestigious Melbourne
Marathon to her growing list of achievements with an easy win against a quality international field on Sunday 14 October, 2001 in one of Australia's biggest marathons.
Hughes pressed for Commonwealth Games selection with a quick 2 hours, 39 minutes and 44 seconds run in blustery and cold conditions. She now has 2 of the 3 fastest marathon times by an Australia woman this year.
A huge Melbourne crowd cheered the young Queenslander to the line.

"To have 6,000 people at the finishing line was fantastic
and this must rank as one of the biggest crowds ever for
a marathon in Australia. Marathon running really presents
a challenge to people and it was great to see so many
athletes take up the challenge," said Hughes.
"The wind made it pretty tough out there, but I knew what
I had to do and had a lot of support during the run. The
Melbourne crowd were great and I'm thrilled to get a time
that could help me represent Australia," said the 26-year-old
Hughes.
Winner of the 2000 Gold Coast Marathon, Hughes stamped
her authority early in the race and went further ahead with
each passing kilometre to win decisively from Japanese runners
Mai Aoki and Kazuyo Nakatanie.
Hughes also won the 2001 Australian Half Marathon championship
in Noosa in August.
